During a 4-hour drive back to Houston from a Louisiana wedding, I had the chance to catch up with a good friend that I was carpooling with. He recently left a very successful career in education (and a nice salary) and is now studying law full-time. We were discussing how as we grow and change in life, it is no longer an option for us to do the things that were once normal to us. Not because we’re “too good”, but because we took one extra step and stumbled into a world we never knew existed. Had he not been willing to try something new (i.e. living as a frugal professional school student), he’d never be able to dream his biggest dreams – it all started with that first decision. Now that he’s actually in law school, he’s exploring things outside of his original goal of going into educational policy – now he’s open to careers that he’d never considered before. And in that moment I realized exactly why it is always good to try something new. We should always be willing to try new things because the more you’re exposed to, the more you’ll realize that you really do have options in life. And that is when you stop settling for average. It only takes one time to try something new before you find yourself wanting to explore it more and take it a step farther. Before you know it, it becomes something that you believe you deserve.
So try it – that thing that feels out of your reach; the thing that will take a bit of a stretch or personal investment. Take a bite of something new and start developing that acquired taste for the good life. Feed your inner curiosity and get full on abundance! (I had a very small lunch today, so I’m starving- forgive my food metaphor).
