You might want to sit down for this; I have something to tell you. Ready? You’re going about it all wrong. Life, achieving your goals, learning, growing – all of it, you’re going about all of it the wrong way. But it’s okay, because most of us are or have been. For a long time I was doing it wrong, too! For as long as I could remember, I focused on what I thought I needed to do to get what I wanted to have. This often meant that I was aimlessly chasing things and checking off things on my to-do list, but also constantly compromising who I was.
I’ve found myself in mentally, emotionally, and physically harmful situations because I thought I was “doing what I had to do”. I thought that if I did certain things, I’d get what I
thought I wanted to have, and then I’d become the person that I imagined myself being. I was operating under the Do – Have – Be formula.
The reality is that our focus should always (under any and every circumstance) be to focus on who we are in the present moment and who I want to be in the future. By focusing on who you want to be, you’ll have clear guidelines of what you should be doing to get there. And once doing those things becomes a habit, you’ll notice that you have all the things you deserve to have! The easiest way to digest this is to think about someone that you really admire. Most people can easily think of someone that they feel is living their dream life and say to themselves, “if I just did what (blank) does, I could have (blank)! And then I’d really be (blank)”. But let’s look at it from a different angle:
- Think of a person that you admire.
- How would you describe this person? What are their characteristics? (personality, quirks, daily habits/routines, lifestyle, etc.) These are the attributes of the type of person that you want to be.
- So now ask yourself, what you could be doing to live more like that?
This is the recipe for the correct formula: Be – Do – Have. Strive to be the type of person that you admire, do the things that will help you maintain a positive self-image. And before you know it, you’ll have the life you want. This is the essence of SucSass: to have all the things you desire in life without having to compromise your authentic, fierce, and sassy self. If nothing else sticks, just remember this: Be – Do – then, Have.
Get to it!
